With winter hitting the 2008 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series only 40 Teams decided to brave the cold and head to Metung on the Gippsland Lakes over the weekend of the 14th & 15th of June for the 2008 Club Marine East Gippsland Bream Classic. Although the water was green due to the large algal bloom that had taken over the system two teams showed that with the right approach and local knowledge there were plenty of cracking bream on offer.

DAY 1.

Usually we focus on just the winners in these reports but with such a tight tussel over the two days between Team Mitchell Fishing & Outdoors and Team Doma it seemed only appropriate that I give a blow by blow account of their paths to the podium. On Saturday Team Doma’s Damien Domagala and Zig Domagala decided to head off to fish the Paynesville area for immediate results. Using a combination of Lucky Craft Cra-Pea lures in colours 207 & 238 rigged on 6lb Sunline V-Hard fluorocarbon leader, 4lb Berkley Crystal Fireline matched to a Diawa 1004 Luvius on GLoomis SR842 IMX rods, Damien and Zig soon had some cracking bream in the well. “Using a Lucky Craft Cra-Pea I would cast within inches of the bank, and then give the lure a gentle pull to get it down about 1.5 feet followed by a two second pause. Giving the rod gentle but sharp twitches then pausing again, I would feel a sharp jab on the rod from the fish.  This sometimes resulted in a hook up, if not I would shake the rod tip to flicker the Cra-Pea without moving it from the strike zone before giving it three to four seconds pause. This proved irresistible to the fish and they would come back and smash the lure resulting in a hookup” Damien said. With this approach Team Doma managed to land a huge bag of 5 bream for 5.36kg on Day 1 handing them the Saturday Berkley Best Bag prize not to mention closing the gate on the Eco-Gear Big Bream prize on day 1 with a cracking bream of 1.46kg

In stark contrast to that of Team Doma, Team Mitchell Fishing & Outdoor’s Aaron Dyer and Graeme Dear had a shocking start to day 1. Starting at Newlands Arm they struggled to find fish and when by 11.30am they hadn’t landed a legal fish they knew they had to make a move or kiss the tournament goodbye. Deciding to move to the Paynesville jetties paid off big time for the pair as the bream were big and willing to grab a lure. With a combination of Squidgy Wrigglers in the blood worm colour on 0.5 gram  Squidgy Finesse jigheads, rigged on 3 to 6lb FC Rock leader, 3 & 4lb Berkley Fireline matched to Shimano Twin-Power and Diawa reels on Millerod Bream Buster Finesse, Shimano T-Curve and Starlo Stix rods they worked their away around the many jetties at Paynesville. Fishing under the moored boats and along the jetties they managed to land 12 bream in an hour which put a smile back on their face. Changing tactics and fishing Stiffy Minnows on the flats between the jetties managed to gain them a few precious upgrades pushing their day 1 bag to 5 bream for an impressive 5.24kg and hot on the heels of Team Doma.

DAY 2.

With most of the field catching a big fat zero on Saturday all eyes were on the leaders to see where they were going to fish and hopefully share in their success. Team Doma repeated the same techniques that gave them their first day lead with the addition of the use of the ever reliable Berkley Gulp Camo Worm on a Nitro 1/24 Nitro jighead. Using a GLoomis DSR820 rod Zig focused on casting the worm tight in alongside and underneath the jetties, then giving the rod gentle lifts and pauses the fish would basically suck the lure in. “Once hooked it was important to use the power of the rod to drag the fish away from the razor sharp pylons” Damien said. When the boys upgraded their final sub 30cm fish with a 40cm fork bream they were both confident their bag of 5 bream for 5.46kg, which gave them a two day total of 10 bream for 10.82kg would secure them the victory.

For Team Mitchell Fishing & Outdoors the challenge had been set and when their Sunday started much better than the previous day the boys were confident they could press for the lead. Heading straight to Paynesville Aaron and Graeme picked up from where they left off on day 1 and had five bream in the well in under an hour and all from the first jetty they stopped at. With these fish being on the small side the decision was made to lighten the leaders to 3lb and pull out the bloodworm wrigglers. This paid dividends as the big bream were keen to bite and the 5 bream they managed to upgrade had them keen to get back to the weigh in and attempt to snatch victory from Team Doma’s hands. The time had come to place their almighty bag on the scales and when the digital display showed 5.66kg Team Mitchell Fishing & Outdoors had taken out the Sunday Berkley Best Bag prize and stolen victory from Team Doma by 80grams making them the 2008 Club Marine East Gippsland Bream Classic Champions.

Next stop sees the 2008 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series head to Nelson on the Glenelg River for the 4th and final qualifying round of the series the Eco-Gear Glenelg Shire Bream Classic.
