The weekend of the 16th & 17th of June saw 46 teams of keen bream anglers take to the water at Metung on the Gippsland Lakes for the Club Marine East Gippsland Bream Classic. The township of Metung hosted the event and anglers were greeted on both days with beautiful clear skies and a light breeze. Even with great conditions this tournament turned out to be one that many bream anglers would rather forget as the sudden cold snap and impending floods that would follow the event shut the bream down so much so that 92 seasoned bream anglers could only manage to weigh in 28 bream for the weekend. With Gippsland Lake's awesome reputation this event was one for the record books.
Although the conditions were unbelievably tough some anglers managed to land those few crucial fish that got them up the leader board and into the top ten. Stephen Duff and Rick Massie of Team Tica Strike-Pro were no exception as they managed to land the 1.54kg Eco-Gear Big Bream contender on day 1, then backed that up on day 2 with a solid bag of 2 bream for 1.66kg to give them the victory with a 2 day bag of 3 fish for 3.20kg, a great effort considering the conditions.
Anglers blasted from the starting line on day 1 unaware that only 10 bream were going to be landed on the Saturday. Taking out the Saturday Berkley Round 1 prize pack was Team Doma's Damien and Zig Domagala who weighed in 2 bream for 1.98kg. Team Doma was followed closely by Team Tica Strike Pro who thanks to Rick Massie weighed in 1 cracking 1.54kg bream keeping them well in the hunt.
After many anglers drowned their sorrows on the Saturday night at the Metung Hotel Sunday saw some very heavy hang overs head to the check in. Many anglers were at a lose as to what they should be doing differently to get those stubborn bream to bite, but for a few teams they found a few good fish that we willing to play the game.
Heading to Toms Creek Stephen Duff and Rick Massie managed to find a water temperature of 11.5 degrees and using a combination of strike pro pygmy hard body lures, Juro long tailed minnows in the red rum colour on a 1/16 ounce jig-head attached to Climax Braid and Frogs Hair fluorocarbon leaders as light as 1.5kg they managed to pull 2 solid fish giving them the Club Marine East Gippsland Shire Crown victory with their 3.2kg bag. Their set ups where all Tica rods and reels consisting of Taurus, Splendor and Libra reels matched to Tica Crispex rods and Stephen Duff own new prototype rods from Tica due to be in tackle stores soon.
An honourable mention has to go to Team SSBB's Phil Smallman and Sing Ling who took out the Sunday Berkley Round 2 prize with an impressive 1 day bag of 3 fish for 3.2kg just missing out on taking the victory based on a count back. To make matters worse the boys failed to weigh in the 1 bream that they had caught on the Saturday due to boat troubles which would have handed them the victory. On a positive note for the boys they are now equal leaders for the Club Marine Team Of The Year Award, just showing their consistent performances this year. The Eco-Gear Big Bream was smashed on the Sunday by Team Dead Ducks Daryl Baird and Bradley Lestrange with an impressive black bream pulling the scales down at 1.76kg.
