The Hopkins River in Warrnambool played host to the Hooked On Rods ‘N’ Reels Bream Classic on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of May. This was the 2nd round of the 2008 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series and with a capacity field of 40 teams being reached for the tournament some 10 weeks earlier, all were eager to finally get their chance to tame the Hopkins black bream. For Bairnsdale locals Dean Gamble and Mark Cribbes of Team Tyre Power – Jig Pro this would be a weekend they would long remember with their stunning come from behind victory.

Saturday morning saw anglers awake to a calm and partly cloudy day with a very high river to contend with due to the mouth being closed for some time. The news had quickly spread from Fridays shortened pre-fish that the lures that would produce the goods was the new lure from the Eco-Gear stable the VX 35 and VX 40 range of vibration lures. Team Tyre Power –Jig Pro flew completely under the radar on day 1 as they weighed in a modest 5/5 bag for 2.18kg which had them in 14th position at the close of Saturdays weigh in. “We fished the flats near the starting line with no luck then pulled 2 legal fish from the Deakin reef area and finally managed our final three legal bream at the Bay of Biscay” Dean said. The boys managed to land 60 bream for the day and with only 5 being legal fish they knew that had to try and find bigger fish on Day 2 for any chance of moving up the leader board. Saturdays leaders taking our the round one Berkley Best Bag Prize was Team Humminbird’s Shaun Clancy and Wayne Friebe who had a very productive day fishing Eco-Gear VX 35’s which helped them land 5/5 bream for 3.82kg planting them firmly in 1st position.

Sunday produced similar conditions for the anglers and with 1.62kg between Team Tyre Power – Jig Pro and Team Humminbird they boys knew it would take something pretty special to catch them. Dean and Mark headed right up the river past the caravan park and towards the Toorum Stones area where they managed to find schooling fish close to the edge. Using a combination of 6lb Nitlon and Bass Hard braids connected to 2lb and 3lb Nitlon and Yamatoyo leaders, matched to 2000 sized Diawa Teirra and Certate reels on 6’8’ Rantall Hopkins Classic Rods they set about catching their tournament winning bag. “ Mark and I found a good patch of fish and just kept working the same 50metre stretch of bank which was a sand edge with reeds scattered through out until the fish came on the bite” Dean said. Dean usually being one angler that likes to move around when the bite slows ignored all his instincts to move and implemented the old tournament strategy which is “don’t leave fish to find fish”. This strategy paid dividends for Team Tyre Power - Jig Pro as they spent the entire session in the one location using a combination of Eco-Gear VX35’s in the black 445 colour and 6inch Berkley Gulp camo worms rigged on 1/32nd Jig Pro jigheads to put together a final day winning bag of 5/5 bream at 4.18kg.

With Team Humminbird finding it hard to find size fish on the Sunday and only managing to weigh in 5/5 bream for 2.14kg Team Tyre Power Jig-Pro had not only taken out the Sunday Berkley Best Bag Prize but their 2 day total of 10/10 bream at 6.36kg was enough to give them the 2008 Hooked On Rods ‘N’ Reels Bream Classic Championship from Team Humminbird by 400 grams. The Eco-Gear Big Bream Prize went to Phillip and Gillian Knight from Team What Ever for their absolutely cracking bream from Saturday’s first round that fell on a Jackell Chubby weighing in at 1.72kg and was never even close to being challenged for the entire weekend.

The next 2 qualifying rounds of the 2008 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series are Round 3 at Metung for the Club Marine East Gippsland Bream Classic on the 14th & 15th of June and Round 4 at Nelson for the Eco-Gear Glenelg Shire Bream Classic on the 9th & 10th of August.
