2013 Hooked On Rods 'N' Reels Bream Classic

Team Colac Tackle Stage A Day 2 Come Back To Steal Victory
The weekend of the 4th & 5th of May saw 45 teams head to Warrnambool on the Hopkins River for Round 3 - Hooked On Rods 'N' Reels Bream Classic. Due to reports of tough fishing in the Hopkins and smaller than normal fish in the river some of the anglers had concerns they wouldn't be able to weigh in over the weekend, this was taken into consideration and the decision was made to lower the expectations - we dropped from the normal 28cm fork to a 29cm tip in order to help the guys out, however Saturday proved that the courtesy of changing to a 29cm tip was not needed, with half the field bringing in bags of 5 & only 3 teams not having a fish to weigh in.
Team Colac Tackle's Steve Parker and Declan Betts would go on to show the rest of the field that size wasn't a problem for them, bringing in ten fish over the weekend for 6.55kg to take out first place. Using a combination of Gloomis and Samari rods matched to Daiwa Steez and Certate reels with Varivas and Sunline braid and leaders, Team Colac Tackle used OSP Dunks, Smith Caimon Dredges, and the black Eco Gear VX 35 in deeper waters to collect their bag on day one. The Eco Gear CX in natural colours was another favourite with the top half of the leader board in Warrnambool again this year. Team Colac Tackle started the day fishing the Jubillee Park area with no luck and slowly made their way downstream to collect their 2.85kg bag fishing the rocky edges between Kings Head and the Bay of Biscay. Team Plonkers Ben Shuey and Richard Patterson weighed in the Eco Gear Big Bream on day one, a chunky 1.41kg Black Bream which would not be beaten by any fish on Sunday. Team Whitehead Timber Sales Dean Truman and Sean Kennedy sat in first place at the end of day one with a 3.65kg bag but it was still anyone's game, and day two would see Team Colac Tackle storm up the leader board from 8th to take out 1st place.
Grey skies and the threat of rain greeted day two of the Hooked On Rods 'N' Reels Bream Classic, but the anglers were lucky with only a few small showers throughout the day. Starting out in the bay of Biscay Team Colac Tackle were empty handed for the first couple of hours, getting broken off by good fish and having the hooks pulled. Frustration was high when the anglers decided to move up river to the Hen & Chicken reefs where they finally found the Bream on the bite. Within an hour they had their bag of five and were able to spend the rest of their time upgrading for a weigh in weight on day two of 3.70kg, totalling 10 fish for 6.55kg for the weekend and moving 7 places to take out first place in the 2013 Hooked On Rods 'N' Reels Bream Classic.
