The weekend of the 15th & 16th of March saw a tornado of tournament boats take over the sleepy township of Mallacoota as a Vic Bream Classic record of 60 teams fought it out for the Yamaha East Gippsland Bream Classic. Being round one of the 2008 Humminbird Vic Bream Classic Series everyone was keen to get off to a good start and make their way into the grand final scheduled for October 2008. With some big names in the field and some quality fishing on offer it was sure to be a highly competitive weekend.

The huge field on Saturday got off to the perfect start thanks to the East Gippsland Shire upgrading the launching facilities at Karbethong which had the field in the water in no time. From the get go it was clear that a large portion of the field were heading towards the Good Win Sands area to fish, unlike previous years where the race to Gipsy Point was the norm. This was the case for Team Compleat Angler's Ben Scullin and Karina Pierotti who decided to head up past the Good Win Sands and fish the Fairhaven area. Using a combination of extremely light line and lightly weighted jig-heads with Berkley Gulp Fry in the Camo colour and Karina's dominating form according to Ben, they had no trouble winning Saturdays Berkley Best Bag Prize. When Karina weighed in Team Compleat Anglers bag of 5 bream for 5.38kg they had hit the front and set the challenge for the rest of the massive field. The talk amongst the anglers on Saturday afternoon soon turned towards the odds on favourites Team Stiffy Lures Kaj "Bushy" Busch and Chris "Slick" Wright who after weighing in a respectable 4.6kg were sitting 4th and everyone knew they would finish hard on Sunday, which as it turned out was exactly what they did.

Bushy and Slick headed out on the Sunday determined to reel in Team Compleat Angler and take out the tournament. The strategy that the Team Stiffy Lures boys implemented consisted of fishing the edges in the bottom lake, casting to structure and sight fishing to big bream using a combination of Shimano rods, Shimano 1000 Stella reels and Shimano Stiffy hard body lures in the Brown Snake colour which had them a good bag early on the Sunday. Looking for some more upgrades they then headed to fish the Good Win Sands area and called on the ever reliable 100mm Squidgy Wriggler in the Bloodworm colour on a 2 gram Squidgy jig head to complete what turned out to be a tournament winning bag.

When Team Compleat Angler's Ben Scullin and Karina Pierotti only managed to weigh in 5 bream for a modest 3.82kg on Sunday the Tournament was wide open to be won. Then up came Slick from Team Stiffy Lures with a bag that looked way too full for only 5 bream and in fact it wasn't just 5 bream but 5 cracking bream in his bag. When the scales pulled down to a whopping 6.18kg Slick and Bushy had not only taken out the Sunday Berkley Best Bag Prize, but more importantly had won the 2008 Yamaha East Gippsland Bream Classic with 10/10 bream for a magical 10.78kg. Snatching 2nd place from the hands of Team Compleat Angler by 14 grams was Team Nitro's Matt Campbell and Tuan Huynu who weighed in 5/5 bream for 4.82kg which included the Eco-Gear Big Bream which was a cracking yellow fin that weighed 1.7kg and smashed the previous 1.52kg big bream mark set on the Saturday.

Mallacoota proved itself yet again to be a world class bream fishery producing another 10kg plus winning bag. Over the 2 days competition 452 bream were weighed in totally 318.82kg for an average weight of 705 grams per bream just illustrating how healthy this system is.
